Reporting Relationship-The Vice President, Chief Applications Officer, and Deputy CIO will report directly to the Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer.

This confidential organization is a 10+ hospital system with nearly $4 billion dollars in net patient revenue, based in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

The Opportunity

This confidential healthcare system (“The Company”) is seeking a new Vice President, Chief Applications Officer and Deputy CIO (“VP”) to lead its clinical and business applications teams and provide broad strategic and operational leadership at a growing, high-impact healthcare organization in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. The company is a mature Epic organization (Most Wired Level 10) and has significantly grown its enterprise and consumer analytics, population health, virtual visits (1.8m+) and Community Connect capabilities over the last 18 months. The VP will be joining and financially and operationally healthy care delivery organization and will have the opportunity to greatly impact the future state of The Company.

Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, the VP will serve as a key member of the Technology Management Group (TMG) and will directly lead a team of approximately 146 full time employees, including the Epic EHR teams. The VP will serve as the Deputy CIO and perform general Technology division leadership and will partner closely with the CIO and other division Vice Presidents. He/She will represent Technology in many senior groups, meetings, and projects. The VP will also be charged with overall responsibility and accountability for the people, processes, and applications used by The Company as it continues to build new facilities and expand its impact in the community.

The VP must ensure that the applications portfolio and roadmap for the organization is reliable, maintainable, scalable, and flexible. He/She must be an Epic expert with deep experience across all modules. The VP will be expected to create repeatable processes, drive operational excellence and build a best-in-class technology services environment that will enable the organization to achieve its strategic goals. The VP will manage the annual update of the Company’s Applications assessment that drives long term planning and budgeting for software applications.

The VP will be expected to serve as the leader of a technology services team that is proactive, highly collaborative and extremely customer focused, delivering the highest levels of customer satisfaction.  He/she will establish trust and confidence among all stakeholders so that the Technology Division has significant credibility within the organization.  


The VP will have a broad set of responsibilities that will encompass the following:

  • Partners with the CIO and Technology Vice Presidents to create and manage divisional annual operating budgets, annual capital plans and projects, application elements of projects, ongoing service levels, and software maintenance and updates.
  • Manages clinical software (Epic) and applications planning and deployment for the enterprise. Uses and improves existing applications assessment and 5-year planning process.
  • Engages and negotiates with The Company’s executives and directors to develop appropriate application needs, capacity plans, and technology investment strategies.
  • Oversees the development of enterprise standards, technology evaluation and the IT governance process.
  • Assesses, evaluates, tests, and selects new and emerging clinical software and applications to support the needs of the enterprise.
  • Stays current on new technologies and platforms.
  • Serves as an internal consultant, providing top-level guidance on the most complex technical projects/initiatives.
  • Sets standards and ensures repeatable process across the clinical technologies landscape.
  • Actively understands relevant legal, legislative, and policy issues as it relates to technology services.
  • Leads the planning and project management for the migration and replacement of clinical applications, software and operating systems. Leads the development and maintenance of performance metrics, workforce planning and resource allocation.
  • Establishes and maintains collaborate, supportive, open and professional working relationships with a variety of executives, management and team members.
  • Manages strategic vendor and partner relationships and ensures the organization is aware of and prepared for changes in technology.
  • Recruits, develops, coaches, motivates and leads a team of associates and contractors to the highest levels of engagement and performance.
  • Develops and manages operating expense budgets and capital budgets.
  • Works collaboratively with and may lead organization-wide committees, task-forces and/or project teams.
  • Creates a climate of empowerment and trust for reporting team members as well as foster a culture of teamwork across all areas of information technology.
  • Represents the Company professionally and positively in both formal and informal settings.
  • Provides enterprise-wide direction on the use of emerging technologies for IT.
  • Maintains current knowledge of HIPAA, privacy and confidentiality and FDA standards to ensure the Company’s technologies are compliant.



The VP will possess a broad clinical (Epic) and business application technologies background but, more importantly, will be a proven technology leader, with demonstrated experience managing people and leading project teams in complex healthcare systems. The successful candidate will bring strong leadership abilities, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to quickly establish credibility and trust with a variety of stakeholders. Healthcare experience within a health system or AMC is required, as is years of Epic EHR experience.

The VP must be immediately recognizable as a leader at all levels of the organization, possessing outstanding communication, listening, and interpersonal skills, and able to quickly establish credibility and rapport with a broad and diverse set of executives and clinicians. He/she must exhibit a strong business orientation and possess a thorough understanding of current healthcare technologies/systems and tools.

Additional desired skills/experience includes:

  • Outstanding leadership abilities and a demonstrated track record of both IT delivery and strategic leadership.
  • Significant experience in technically supporting, planning, and managing hospital information systems in highly complex environments.
  • Proven management responsibility for overseeing multiple project teams responsible for hospital systems implementation and support.
  • Project experience should include leading multiple corporate-wide projects.
  • Demonstrated knowledge managing and supporting a variety of financial and clinical applications.
  • Operational knowledge of healthcare clinical and business areas including high-level workflows preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, develop, and implement executive level strategic plans.
  • Experience with and a detailed understanding of standard systems implementation, programming, integration, conversion, and testing techniques.
  • Familiarity with project management methodologies and tracking software.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated analytical and excellent verbal and written communication skills essential to articulate goals and progress to customers.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams and their projects from concept through implementation, ensuring the project is on target both in scope and timeline and desired outcomes were achieved.
  • Ability to build strong collaborative team-oriented relationships with clinicians, internal and external senior management, senior technical personnel and vendors, and direct reports/teams.

    A bachelor’s degree is required and an advanced degree is preferred.
