Organization History
Headquartered in Florida, Availity was founded in 2001 as a joint venture between Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida and Humana. The two companies sought to empower physicians and other health care professionals in the state of Florida with a smarter business solution to conduct their daily health plan transactions. The goal was to connect providers of care with multiple health plans through a secure, Internet-based, HIPAA-compliant electronic network.
In 2006, Availity combined with The Health Information Network (THIN), a health care clearinghouse and wholly-owned subsidiary of Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), which operates the Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans in Illinois, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.
In 2009, WellPoint, Inc., which operates health plans in 14 states, selected Availity as a strategic part of its suite of online provider solutions and made an investment in Availity’s industry-leading multi-plan platform. With the addition of WellPoint as an owner, Availity continues to broaden its reach into more states throughout the country. Also in 2009, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota joined Availity’s other owners in the joint venture.
In September 2010, Availity acquired RealMed, an award-winning provider of revenue cycle management services. An Availity company, RealMed’s service and solutions led to its ranking as 2009 “Best in KLAS” for claims and clearinghouse services. The acquisition positions the combined enterprise to deliver health information solutions to a nationally growing network that currently includes more than 200,000 physicians and providers of care, 1,000 hospitals, 1,300 health plans, and 450 industry partners.
Today, Availity is one of the leading health information networks in the country. It optimizes information exchange between multiple health care stakeholders through a single, secure network. The Availity® Health Information Network encompasses business and clinical services, supporting both real-time and batch electronic data interchange (EDI) via the Web and business-to-business (B2B) integration.
