MUSC Physicians is the physician group of the Medical University of South Carolina providing services ranging from prevention and wellness to highly specialized care throughout the Charleston, SC area.
Organization History
MUSC Physicians (formerly University Medical Associates) is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt charitable corporation including the full-time clinical professional staff of the Medical University of South Carolina. By the authority of the UMA Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer oversees all MUSC Physician operations.
MUSC Physicians is the faculty practice plan for the Medical University of South Carolina, providing services ranging from prevention and wellness to highly specialized care at outpatient clinics and facilities both on the MUSC campus and extending into the community. MUSC Physicians has the widest range of specialty care available at any medical center in South Carolina.
On May 1, 2012, University Medical Associates (UMA) officially changed their name to MUSC Physicians for marketing purposes. The reason for the name change to MUSC Physicians is to enhance our organizational identity on both a local and national level by clearly defining our relationship to the Medical University of South Carolina. The name MUSC Physicians, will simplify who we are in the minds of our customers/patients in order to enable us to grow and achieve even greater success throughout the state of South Carolina.
UMA was officially created on July 1, 1991. The organization was previously known as the Professional Staff Office which opened in October, 1965. In 1965, a staff of 21 occupied a small third-floor office in the Medical University Hospital and an office trailer on Bee Street, and provided billing and collection services for 61 Medical University physicians. MUSCP currently operates as the centralized clinical practice plan of the clinical departments of the MUSC College of Medicine. MUSC Physicians is currently comprised of approximately 850 faculty members (clinical and research) and 775 staff employees.
MUSC Physicians - Primary Care (formerly Carolina Family Care) is a for-profit primary care private practice network. The network currently has seven General Internal Medicine practices, three Family Medicine practices, one Allergy practice and a Lab. Although its legal name will remain Carolina Family Care (CFC), CFC changed its name to MUSC Physicians Primary Care for marketing purposes on May 1, 2012.
