Organization Profile

St. Charles Health System

Organization Overview

With four hospitals and more than 220 employed medical providers, St. Charles Health System is the largest provider of medical care in Central Oregon. We take our role in our communities seriously and have pledged to work with our partners to achieve our vision: Creating America's healthiest community, together.

St. Charles Health System began in 2001 as Cascade Health Services when St. Charles Medical Center in Bend merged with Central Oregon District Hospital in Redmond. Today, St. Charles owns and operates medical centers in Bend, Redmond, Prineville and Madras.

Our medical centers in Bend and Redmond are accredited by The Joint Commission. St. Charles Bend is Oregon's only Level II Trauma Center east of the Cascades. St. Charles Prineville and St. Charles Madras are critical access hospitals that are well regarded in their commitment to modern, progressive health care.

A private, nonprofit Oregon corporation, we're Central Oregon's largest employer with more than 3,400 caregivers in Bend, Madras, Redmond, Prineville and Sisters combined. More than 350 active medical staff members and approximately 200 visiting medical staff members also make it possible for St. Charles to deliver a wide range of excellent care in a compassionate, healing environment.

Organization History

For more than 90 years, St. Charles Health System, and its associated hospitals, has provided quality health care to all those in need. The system itself began in 2001 when St. Charles Medical Center in Bend and Central Oregon District Hospital in Redmond merged to form Cascade Health Services. In 2008, the system grew to include Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Prineville through a lease agreement. And in 2010 the organization changed its name from Cascade Healthcare Community to St. Charles Health System. The growth of the system continued in 2013 when Mountain View Hospital in Madras became part of the St. Charles family and changed its name to St. Charles Madras. On Sept. 21, 2015, Pioneer Memorial Hospital closed and a new hospital, St. Charles Prineville, opened for service.

Notable Accomplishments / Recognition

St. Charles Health System recently completed its strategic planning process. The following are a few highlights I’m particularly excited to share:

· A key component of the plan is that improvement efforts surround all that we do – We are improving one patient at a time
· Our “breakthrough strategy,” that we are calling St. Charles Integrated Care, will propel us on our path toward improving population health
· Critical work has begun on our True North metrics which include the following:
o People
o Safety
o Quality
o Experience
o Delivery
o Cost
· We have set three goals for the health system that can be tracked through specific metrics including:
o Becoming the healthiest communities in Oregon in the next 10 years
o Being named the top health system in the nation within the next seven years
o Becoming the top place to work in the next five years

Much work has already been achieved in the areas of Information, Improvement, Culture of Safety and Cost Structure and that work will continue under our new strategic plan.
