Organization Profile

St. Luke's Health System

Organization Overview

Founded as a six-bed frontier hospital in 1902, St. Luke’s has evolved to become Idaho’s largest health care provider. Today St. Luke’s is the only locally governed, Idaho-based, not-for-profit health system, with a network of five full service medical centers and more than 70 outpatient centers and clinics serving people throughout southern Idaho, eastern Oregon, and northern Nevada. St. Luke’s is home to the state’s first Magnet Hospitals, recognized for nursing excellence, and is the region’s leader in heart, cancer, women’s, and children’s services.

St. Luke’s 8,000 employees, 970-member medical staff, and more than 850 volunteers are committed to delivering the highest quality care to those in medical need regardless of their ability to pay. With a mission “To improve the health of people in our region,” St. Luke’s provided $293 million (including capital) in community benefit during its 2009 fiscal year. The hospitals of St. Luke’s have earned numerous national awards and recognition for excellence in patient care.

St. Luke’s major facilities include St. Luke’s Boise Medical Center, our downtown Boise tertiary medical center; St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center, serving rural and growing communities in south central Idaho; St. Luke’s Meridian Medical Center, a community hospital in the rapidly growing city of Meridian; St. Luke’s McCall Medical Center, a community hospital in the central Idaho mountains; St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center, a critical-access hospital in the Sun Valley area; St. Luke’s Eagle, providing urgent care and a variety of other health care services to the west Treasure Valley; St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital in Boise, the state’s only children’s hospital; and St. Luke’s Mountain States Tumor Institute, one of the Northwest’s most respected cancer care centers.

Organization History

Since its founding in 1902 by the Rt. Rev. James B. Funsten, St. Luke’s has been committed to serving the needs of a growing region. Over the years, the community has responded with a strong, local commitment to the medical center. As the demand for health care has grown, so has the scope of St. Luke’s services. Once a simple, six-bed hospital, St. Luke’s Health System is now Idaho’s largest health care provider, with four full-service hospitals and more than 25 outpatient treatment facilities and clinics. With 970 physicians on it's medical staff and 8,000 employees, we serve more than 500,000 patients each year from throughout Idaho and the six adjoining states.

To help enhance medical services for people in our outlying communities, St. Luke’s has forged a variety of partnerships and affiliations with other health care facilities in our region. From McCall to Challis, St. Luke’s provides assistance with everything from administrative duties to onsite clinical care.
